CISCO NEXUS 9500 R SERIES LINE CARDS AND FABRIC MODULES
Product overview
The Cisco Nexus® 9500 R-Series switching platform (Figure 1) offers two modular chassis:
- Cisco Nexus 9500 4-slot switch
- Cisco Nexus 9500 8-slot switch
These chassis support the Cisco Nexus 9500 R-Series line cards and fabric modules. These line cards offer 100-, 40-, 25-, 10-, and 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports with deep buffers and large tables, delivering up to 9.6 Terabits per second (Tbps) per slot, for a total of 76.8-Tbps in the 8-slot chassis.
Cisco Nexus 9500 Platform R-Series line cards
The Cisco Nexus 9500 platform is designed as a Clos fabric that interconnects each line card directly with each rear-mounted fabric module. All traffic between the line cards is load balanced across all fabric modules providing optimal bandwidth distribution within the chassis. This load-balancing capability provides enhanced system reliability and redundancy. The switch continues to operate even in the event of a loss of a fabric module, albeit at a lower capacity, as the remaining fabric modules continue to provide switching capacity to the line cards. Some of these line cards can connect to 1 or 2 additional fabric modules to provide N+1 or N+2 redundancy.
Warranty
The Cisco Nexus 9500 R-Series line cards have a 1-year limited hardware warranty. The warranty includes hardware replacement with a 10-day turnaround from receipt of a Return Materials Authorization (RMA).

High scalability in interface speeds with T3/E3 ports, OC-3c/STM-1, OC-12c/STM-4, and OC-48c/ STM-16 AXSM modules. Each port on the AXSM can be configured for either trunk or access applications.
Industry leading module port densities of 16 T3/E3 ports, 16 OC-3c/STM-1 ports, 4 OC-12c/STM-4 ports, and 1 OC-48c/ STM-16 port that can scale up to 12 OC-48c/STM-16 modules in each MGX 8850 Multiservice Switch. Each OC-48c/STM-16 delivers fully nonblocking, full duplex throughput, in which a connection can occupy the entire line rate.
Support for all ATM service classes, with up to 16 classes of service (CoS). Supports carrier-class implementation of standards-based PNNI, SVC/SVP, SPVC/SPVP, and MPLS services. Large cell buffers (one million cells), which help to maximize "goodput" performance during congestion, reducing the number of retransmits; the buffers are allocated dynamically, depending on connection resource needs, thereby optimizing use of system resources.
